The building Cora rented turned out to be a barn—a big, empty wooden structure with a high ceiling and a floor of dirt and straw.

Large bales were stacked around the perimeter, the perfect stage for target practice.

“Help me with these.” I handed Tristan the box of glass bottles.

“I’m not thirsty.” He stared down into the box...of empty bottles.

“They aren’t for drinking, they’re for shooting.”

He just stared at me with a glazed look on his face.

“Go line them up on the straw.”

“Yeah-huh.” He bent over and emptied the box onto the floor. The bottles rolled and clanked against each other.

“What are you doing?” I wasn’t annoyed with him, just baffled. It wasn’t like he accidently dropped them. It was a purposeful act.

“They’re on the straw. You said on the straw.”

I picked up two and walked them over to one of the straw bales, and sat them upright next to each other. “Like this.”

“Okay.”

Instead of refilling the box to carry all the bottles at once, Tristan picked up just one and brought it over. He set it next to the ones I’d carried and nodded at it approvingly.

I considered suggesting he carry them all together, but then I saw Cora by the entry of the barn. She was speaking softly to Wanda. If not for my shifter hearing, I wouldn’t have been able to hear her at all.

“I’m really sorry about Bill.”

“No, don’t be.” Wanda wiped the tears from her cheeks. “It’s not your fault he’s a lying, cheating bastard. I knew he was spending too much time with Ronald. I just wrote it off, you know? I was stupid.”

“You weren’t. It’s never stupid to see the best in people.”

“It was with Bill. I should have known after the last time. These are the last tears I will cry for that man. I will stomp the shit out of his testicles, but hell if he deserves my tears.”

“Well…” Cora didn’t seem to know what to say. I couldn’t blame her.

“Let’s get this over with. I’ll do what I promised, just as you did, but it needs to be soon. I can’t spend forever coming out to the middle of nowhere to watch…” Her eyes lingered on Tristan. “To watch target practice.”

Agnes stepped inside, weapon box in hand. Her shoulders hung low with the weight of it, so I jogged over to offer my assistance.

Wanda took a seat on one of the straw bales by the wall and watched Tristan from across the room as he bent over and picked up one bottle at a time.

When I reached Agnes, Cora was already there, taking the box from her grandmother.

“Thank you, dear.” Agnes rolled her shoulders and pulled her long gray hair from beneath the collar of her coat.

“Of course,” Cora said. “You shouldn’t have to lift this anyway.”

“Would you like me to carry that?” I offered.

Cora just looked at me. Agnes looked back and forth between us.

A melody rang out into the open barn, echoing in the near-empty space. It was a Christmas tune—"Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.
